Paw edema model can be divided into rats and mice. It is widely used because of its cheap price, simple operation and easy measurement. Egg white and carrageenan are often used to induced paw edema. Carrageen-induced paw edema is a classical acute inflammation model commonly used in medical test as animal experiments. It is mainly used for clinical screening and evaluation of anti-inflammatory effects and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of drugs. Carrageenan is an acidic mucopolysaccharide of the Irish seaweed, which can induce edema by injecting prostaglandin through the cyclooxygenase metabolic pathway into the soles of rats. The inflammation of rat paw edema model induced by carrageenan develops rapidly, the degree of edema can reach 70%-100%. The inflammation usually subsides obviously in 6-8 hours, and the reaction to drugs is more sensitive and reproducible.
Aim: To establish carrageenan-induced paw edema model in the wistar rats and examine the effect of indomethacin and dexamethasone.
