Capsaicin causes coughing and bronchoconstriction primarily by stimulating the release of neurotransmitters from C fibers. Guinea pigs were placed in a special enclosed chamber. Capsaicin was atomized by an ultrasonic nebulizer and released into the enclosed chamber, causing cough symptoms in the guinea pigs. We counted the cough frequency of guinea pigs over 10 minutes (about 10-20 times). Capsaicin can cause airway contraction in guinea pigs, however, and excessive concentrations of capsaicin can lead to suffocation of guinea pigs, so controlling capsaicin concentration is a crucial step when utilizing this model.
Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of codeine on capsaicin-induced cough in guinea pigs.
